The flat ¾ mile trail is an engaging glimpse into what Juneau has to offer. While this can feel like a bustling big city street during peak summer, it is often clear in the early mornings and late evenings perfect for painting and photography. The trail branches off in front of the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors center and skirts the lake. Several little creeks along the way can form beautiful little pools that create great wildlife hot spots. The young budding forest is full of Sitka alder, black cottonwoods, and several species of willow. This is a popular highway for porcupine, beaver, and red squirrels in the early spring and late fall. While this is a spectacular bird watching area, it is a sensitive nesting area, especially for Arctic terns. The...

The easiest access is from the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center parking lot where a series of boardwalk platforms lead from the Steep Creek viewing area onto the gravel trail. There are many little cut-offs and spur trails, but please try to stay on the main path as the area is very delicate, especially the black crust along the silty moraine. Since the area has not been out from under the ice for very long, these ecosystems are incredibly susceptible to foot traffic. There are many areas where moss has been beaten down and the microbial black soil has been destroyed. These plants are hardy but none are strong enough to hold up to the heavy traffic this trail sees. This area has a rich diversity of mossy forest floor,...

McGinnis Eagle Beach Region Boy Scout Beach Trail Eagle Beach Eagle Glacier Trail Herbert Glacier Trail Peterson Lake Windfall Lake Trail Point Bridget Point Bridget Trail East Glacier Trail Juneau’s Quick Escape From the Summer Throngs Google Map Directions East Glacier is one of the more heavily treaded trails due to its proximity to the Mendenhall Glacier visitor center, but few of the thousands of daily cruise ship passengers make it up into the hills leaving it much quieter than the lower sections such as the trail of time. Due to its wide diversity of ecosystems, views, and conditions along with its abundance of flora and fauna the trail has a lot to offer in just a short time. East Glacier is also a wonderful connection to Nugget Trail and Thunder Mountain. Along the way trail users will find a lot of evidence of Juneau’s first hydroelectric power plant. Hydroelectricity has been a major part of the city for a long time and the new Salmon creek reservoir is the main power source today. To the keen eye there is also many signs of...
