Trail of Time

Step Away From the Glacier’s Summer Madness

Pros: Excellent trail for seeing vibrant rainforest away from the tourist crowd. Black bears and salmon are often seen from this trail in the summer months.

Cons: No food or flavored drinks are allowed on the trail due to bear activity. Only bring water.

Distance: 0.75 miles around the loop.

Difficulty: Easy

Elevation Gain: Nearly flat with only a couple hills, the highest being around 75 feet of gain.

Trail Type: Loop

Camping: None

Congestion: Moderate

Trail Condition: Well maintained dirt and gravel trail. Some parts are paved near the visitor center.

Parking: Abundant parking, however, large demand for it in the summer. Best parking is just after the tour bus parking lot.

This short three quarter mile trail packs a lot in a short distance. With markers of the passing glacial history, there is plenty to dig into for walkers of all ages. The trail also crosses over Steep Creek at the apex of the salmon spawning area which can make it a good place to see a black bear during most of the summer months. Perhaps what the Trail of Time is most popular for is avoiding the busy Mendenhall Glacier Visitor center vehicle area during the summer months.

Clear lines of the forest concession are visible as you start from bare or lichen covered rocks by the Visitor Center giving way to thick moss before diving into a forest of willow, cottonwood, and alder. A small outlook shortly after the beginning of the trail provides a more private outlook of the glacier and displays some historic photos showing the Mendenhall Glacier?s recession. An observant hiker can spot 1937, 1936, 1920, and 1916 ice recession markers along both sides of the trail carved in glacial erratic granite. Up high in the cottonwoods is a good place to see a porcupine and even bear cubs in the early summer.

What were just a few adventurous spruce trees in the beginning, are soon the majority of the forest as you step further away from the Visitor?s Center. There are trail maps along the way to help keep you on the right track through a couple of intersections with East Glacier trail along with other historic and informational plaques along the way. By the end of the trail, you might even start to see some Western Hemlock sprouting up, reaching for their turn in the canopy of the forest.

There are several variations of the short loop depending on what hikers are interested in. The easiest way to access the beginning of the trail is from right out the back of the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor?s Center which is located at the end of Glacier Spur Road. The trail can be accessed by going up the stairs or ramp and going to the right or left around the back of the building. The trail starts out paved to the first outlook where it turns to a well-improved gravel and dirt trail. The turn offs for East Glacier Trail are on the left as you walk away from the Visitor?s Center. If you don?t turn, the Trail of Time will become the Powerline trail. If you turn to the right a little way after crossing Steep Creek, you will cut the loop short or you can take a right at the Powerline trail junction and take the longer loop through some lush mossy areas. Both ways meet up before crossing steep creek the second time and pass behind a beaver pond to come out near the base of the Visitor?s Center. There is also a left turn after the bridge to come out near a smaller auxiliary parking area on the side of the road.

Looking for a guided tour? We have multiple to choose from.

Day 1 ? Juneau to Bartlett Cove

  • Get an early morning start out of Auke Bay in Juneau, Alaska. Watch the hustle and bustle of cars, boats, planes and people slowly fade as you round the corner for the beginning of your adventure. Get to know Captain Hoock and his crew as you learn the ropes of sailing and get acquainted with the wild that is Southeast Alaska. As the S/V Arcturus rounds Point Retreat of Admiralty Island, known as fortress of the bears, you may begin to feel small as you cruise over 2,000 ft of water in the Lynn Canal at the foot of 7,000 ft peaks of the Chilkat Mountains. With good wind we will set sail and quietly glide toward Glacier Bay. By evening we will pull up to Bartlett Cove.

Day 2 ??Beardslee Islands

  • We will enjoy breakfast on our way to the Beardslee Islands in the mouth of Glacier Bay. From here we can get off and paddle through the islands to enjoy the beautiful shorelines with a backdrop of incredible mountains peaks. That night we will harbor in Beartrack Bay and listen for the sound of wolves, owls, and other wildlife. If you haven?t had enough paddling, and the weather is permitting, and moonlight paddle after dinner is a wonderful way to wrap up the day.

Day 3 ??Beartrack

  • Relax after a long day of paddling. Take a late start to breakfast and look for?some of the park?s furry residents from the deck of the Arcturus?or a hike through the woods.?

Day 4 ? Tidal Inlet

  • Breakfast is served while cruising?up the west arm of Glacier Bay to stop at Tidal Inlet. This little fjord is known for some of the fastest currents in Alaska, and if your game, we plan to ride them. As we paddle in with the tide feel the awe set in passing by steep mountain walls to the end of the fjord where we will ride the tide back out the the Arcturus and be swept away to Reid Glacier?for the night.

Day 5 ??Reid Glacier

  • Step out into the world of ice and adventure along the Reid Glacier by foot for a greater perspective of the surrounding area. Find your way across the moraine to see how these glaciers shape the land around them and provide for the abundant sea life.?Nestled far back in the inlet you can breathe?the wild air far from civilization.

Day 6 ??Johns Hopkins, Grand Pacific, and Margerie Glaciers

  • After a small taste of the Reid, now paddle through a myriad of icebergs dropped by Johns Hopkins Glacier and experience the raw power and mystical beauty of an advancing tide water glacier. One of four advancing glaciers in Alaska out of 100,000 receding glaciers. At the far reaches of the park nestled into the tallest mountains in the Fairweather range, it is a magnificent beauty few will get to see. Then Cruise by Margerie and Grand Pacific Glacier for evening photos before settling down for your last night in the wilderness.

Day 7 ??Sailing Home

  • With a nice long stretch to cover back to Bartlett Cove, we’ll cruise our way through the incredible mountain fjords, by islands of wonder, and majestic water before ending in Bartlett Cove late in the evening.?

Day 8 ? Bartlett Cove to Juneau

  • We’ll take a late morning start for one last breakfast that couldn’t be beat. We stroll through exhibits of whale bones, totems, and one last look for wildlife in the woods before boarding a plane back to Juneau for a view from the air before you travel home.
There are three different sleeping berths on the S.V. Arcturus. There is a minimum of 2 people per booking.

Master Bedroom: $4,300 per person

State Room: $3,500 per person

Bunk Room: $2,700 per person

All prices include:?

  • Meals, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages *
  • Most activity gear (ask for specifics on activities you are interested in)
  • Professional guide
  • Sailing captain
  • Airplane ticket?between Juneau and Gustavus (or vice-versa)

Prices do not include:

  • Rain gear
  • rubber boots (these are essential in Alaska)
  • Fishing license (however, is purchasable on board the boat)
  • Transportation and land accommodations before and after your trip. We have exclusive add-on extra options here you may ask about if looking for options.
  • Alcoholic beverages. You may purchase your own alcohol?prior to departure. We do provide non-alcoholic mixers.
  • Gratuities

* We provide all meal ingredients, however, we do encourage participation from passengers in helping with food preparation and clean up.

Difficulty: Varies?? This tour can vary based on the groups interest. Being at sea is usually calm and enjoyable. A stroll along the beach or a short paddle is relaxing. However, an 8 hour hike or paddle can be very difficult no matter what terrain you are covering. We adapt the difficulty to you.

What wildlife will I see?

This is not a wildlife tour and wildlife is wild for a reason, so we do not guarantee any sightings. However, wildlife that could be seen are bald eagles, mountain goats, wolves, otters, porcupine, and murrelets, scoters, cormorants, and many many others.

Will I see a bear?

Bears do thrive in this area and stroll the beaches from time to time, but it largely depends on winter whether they will be out or not.?There is a chance of?stumbling into one while out exploring.?Your guide is trained in proper bear safety protocol and carries bear spray at all times.

How difficult is the terrain?

The places we will get off to explore have no trails. Sometimes it can be flat along the beach or streams, but dense and downed trees make a short distance take hours. Walking along rocky terrain or glacial moraine brings its own difficulties of slick rock or sink pits. Much of the terrain very quickly gains elevation which can make hikes very difficult. Luckily in the spring there is little bush whacking as long as you stick to the forest. However, with so much area to choose from our guide can find something to fit your activity level.

Can I bring my own gear?

Yes!?You will need to. We supply food, bedding, dry suits, paddle equipment, and the kitchen sink, but if you have something specific you want to bring, contact us so we can make it happen. We will have a few odds and ends, but otherwise, you will need to bring you own boots, shoes, cloths, sun glasses, gloves, and hats.

How close will I get to a glacier?

This can be largely dependent on ice flow, snow, and weather conditions, but most of the time we can get within a stones throw, if not touching it.

What is the weather like?

Temperatures in the spring can range greatly from?mid 20’s to mid 50?F typically. Juneau rains on average 62 inches per year with more rain coming in the later summer compared to spring and early summer. Conditions in fjords can vary greatly from one to the next depending on the amount of ice and the weather systems. It could be snowing one day, sunny the next, and rainy the day after. Prepare for cool weather and rain. Best to err on the side of cold, these are glaciers we are going to see.

Does my cell phone work in Juneau?

Maybe. AT&T and Verizon are the only two providers who support Juneau. Neither Sprint or T-Mobile users will have service here unless they are roaming. Once we leave Juneau, service will be spotty at best, and mostly non-existent. We are going to the wilderness after al!

What are these free photos you offer?

We believe you should stay focused on the nature and beauty of Alaska and not have to worry about taking photos. We want to keep you in the present moment.?Your guide is a talented?photographer, naturalist, historian, and all around good human being. Sticking with the photography part, your guide takes photos throughout your entire time exploring. We’ll get the best angles for your perfect Instagram post, Facebook update, or for hanging in your hallway at home. A week?after your tour, we email you a web link where you can view and download all of the photos we shot. They are yours to use however you wish at no additional cost.

What type of clothing should I wear?

Packing for a long trip like this can be difficult, but the best thing to do is to expect rain. We recommend 2 layers plus a waterproof jacket each day for hiking. When we are paddling you will have dry suits, and one layer will be good underneath. This could be a t-shirt, long-sleeve base layer, and rain jacket, but none of them should be cotton! Just remember, cotton kills. Materials such as polyester, nylon, wool, or other wicking material that do not retain moisture are best. These material suggestions go for pants too. Consider wearing rain pants should conditions call for it. Comfortable cotton clothes are ok for hanging around the boat, just know that if they get wet, they will probably stay wet for the duration of the trip, this is a moist environment.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes! If you book a full 6 people on the boat, you get 10% off.

Do you offer private tours?

Yes!?You can charter the whole boat with a Captain and guide. From there we can customize a tour to hit the top spots on your list. Call us if you are interested.

What is your refund policy??

See our refund policy by clicking here.

What if the tour is late returning and I miss transport home?

While weather can delay our time on the water some times, we build the elements into our return times. We guarantee you will make it back for yours. In the event this does happen and we are at fault, we provide you with accommodations, food, and flight to where you need to go to be back on schedule. Please feel free to contact us ahead of time to verify scheduling of the tour and your?departure. We encourage planning one extra day in Juneau at the beginning and end of your tour.

What if my plane or ferry?is delayed getting to Juneau?

Please notify us ASAP if you know you?are?going to be late. Contact numbers are listed in your booking details which you can call or text. We will rearrange the schedule if possible to accommodate your changed arrival time. We suggest giving yourself a day padding if possible on either side to avoid tight connections. Plus Juneau is a pretty cool place all by itself. If we are unable to change the schedule, you will be fully refunded the cost of your ticket.

What if my tour is cancelled by Adventure Flow due weather or other reason?

If Adventure Flow cancels your tour, we will refund you 100% the cost of your ticket.

Do I need to print my ticket?

We recommend printing the email confirmation we send you because it has detailed instructions for your tour. However, we store your booking information in our database and we will not ask you for any ticket.

Day 3 ??Wachusett

  • Relax for a day with a late start and cruise along some of the park?s less visited shoreline where Muir glacier covered the land when famous naturalist John Muir visited the bay in 1879. We will slowly meander along the mountains and into Wachusett Inlet for a leisurely paddle among the towering fjord walls that once held a branch of the Carroll Glacier not that long ago.

Day 4 ? Muir Inlet and McBride Glacier lagoon

  • Breakfast is served while cruising to the end of Muir Inlet. We will be ticking off the years of retreat through the fjord as we cover photography techniques for capturing the sheer grandeur of the rock walls and glacier valleys. In the afternoon we will hop off the Arcturus at McBride Glacier to Paddle among icebergs and see the deep blues and shifting ice in the bottleneck of the tide. That evening will anchor at the end of the Muir Inlet.

Day 5 ? Muir Glacier

  • Take a day to relax or adventure?deep in the wild of Glacier bay at the end of Muir Inlet. Find your way across the moraine and?face to face with the last remnants of the namesake glacier that sparked the fire within John Muir himself and would eventually lead to the booming tourism, expanding outdoor recreation and ultimately the conservation movement. Nestled far back in the inlet you can breathe deeper for one last night before returning to civilization.

Day 6 ??Gustavus

  • Our last day in Glacier Bay is a slow cruise out to Gustavus recounting stories and soaking up the last of this majestic area. In Gustavus we will offload from the boat and catch a flight?back to Juneau covering the tremendous country you spent the last 6 days in from the air. Feel the full experience of the land, air and sea.
There are three different sleeping berths on the S.V. Arcturus. There is a minimum of 2 people per booking.

  • Eric was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We absolutely loved the hike. Views of the glacier were amazing! Would much rather see it from this perspective than land on it in a helicopter. Eric's photography and videography skills are impressive. We finished a little early and got to stop at Alaskan Brewery on the way back which was also fantastic. Highly recommend!

What trail do you hike?

We hike West Glacier Trail.

Do you go to the Mendenhall ice caves?

No. Our hike goes along the west side of the glacier and does not depart from the trail towards the glacier face.?The path to the ice caves is very difficult and we do not suggest attempting it unless you are an experienced hiker or you have a knowledgeable guide with you. We are not able to arrange a guided hike for you or provide instructions on how to get there.?Our hiking tour takes you very close to the glacier to capture it’s magnitude and brilliance without the troubles of ice climbing gear or excessively difficult terrain.

How difficult is the trail?

See this page for a detailed breakdown of what to expect when hiking West Glacier trail as part of this?tour.

How close will I get to the glacier?

You will be a couple hundred feet above the glacier ice (incredible views) and roughly a quarter mile away.

What wildlife will I see?

This is not a wildlife tour and wildlife is wild for a reason, so we do not guarantee any sightings. However, wildlife that could be seen are red squirrels, porcupine, and a large array of birds.

Will I see a bear?

Black bears do thrive in this area and we have seen bears on West Glacier trail before. However, it is unlikely we will run into any bears on the hike. Your guide is trained in proper bear safety protocol and carries bear spray at all times.

Can I bring my own backpack and snacks?

Yes! Although we do provide a small pack and snacks, you are welcome to bring your own as well. You can leave personal items on the bus while hiking should you decide it isn’t needed.

What is the weather like?

Temperatures range in the summer from mid 40’s to mid 60?F typically. Juneau rains on average 62 inches per year with more rain coming in the later summer compared to spring and early summer. Conditions on the trail are about the same as they are in town. Prepare for cool weather and rain.

Does my cell phone work in Juneau?

Maybe. AT&T and Verizon are the only two providers who support Juneau. Neither Sprint or T-Mobile users will have service here unless they are roaming.

Do you pickup guests at the cruise ship docks?

Yes! Our primary pickup location is at?the bus lot of the cruise ship terminal (CT dock, or Dock C). This is right next to the Mt. Roberts Tramway. It is a 5 minute walk from the Alaska Steamship dock and Franklin dock. Those who are dropped off at AJ dock are recommended to allow extra time to take the short shuttle ride that leaves you at the pickup location, CT dock. You will be provided detailed pickup instructions upon booking.

Do you pickup guests staying at a hotel?

Sometimes. We ask that all guests staying at downtown hotels or B&B’s walk to the pickup location near Mt. Roberts tram. This is anywhere from a 10-20 minute walk depending where you are located. We do pickup at hotels in the Valley (near the airport). Please let us know during booking that you would like pickup and which Valley hotel you are staying at. We will provide additional instructions for pickup after booking. We are not able to pickup anywhere on Douglas Island.

Where do you drop off?

We drop you off at the same location we pick you up.

What is so great about Raven the Adventure Bus?

You will be transported to the trailhead on Raven the Adventure Bus. She is the only winged black mini-bus roaming the streets of Juneau. She has black perimeter?seating and a raised roof meaning you can stand without a problem. There is even a wonderful sound system for hearing your guide or playing music?? whatever the mood calls for. Before joining Adventure Flow, Raven was a party bus based in Seattle. We feel Raven is a key component to having the optimal tour experience for pre and post tour relaxation.

What are these free photos you offer?

We believe you should stay focused on the nature and beauty of Alaska and not have to worry about taking photos. We want to keep you in the present moment.?Your guide is a talented?photographer, naturalist, historian, and all around good human being. Sticking with the photography part, your guide takes photos throughout your entire time on the trail. We have been on this trail many times so we know where to get the best angles for your perfect Instagram post, Facebook update, or for hanging in your hallway at home. A couple days after your tour, we email you a web link where you can view and download all of the photos we shot. They are yours to use however you wish at no additional cost.

Why do I need a headset on the trail?

This is how most non-Adventure Flow hiking tours work: walk on trail; group?spreads apart; guide waits for everyone to come together; guide gives a few minute spiel; repeat. We do it different. We want you fully engaged with your guide throughout the whole tour and hearing your guide is difficult if they are 50 feet ahead and 4 other people are in-between. Using our specialized headset, you can hear the guides stories, jokes, and fun facts from wherever you are on the trail! This also let’s the guide become more conversational with the group because there?is far more time for interpretation of the beautiful scenery. And don’t worry about missing out on the wonderful?sounds of nature either. The headsets are bone-conducting and sit outside the ear. This leaves your ear canal wide open for hearing the rest of the world. And if you get tired of listening to your guide, you can always turn him off :-)?Everyone wins!

What type of clothing should I wear?

This depends on the weather. We recommend wearing 2 layers plus a waterproof jacket. This could be a t-shirt, long-sleeve base layer, and rain jacket. Avoid cotton! Materials such as polyester, nylon, wool, or other wicking material that do not retain moisture are best. These material suggestions go for pants too. Consider wearing rain pants should conditions call for it. We do provide a durable waterproof rain poncho, however, having your own well fitting clothing is more comfortable.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes! If you are a large group, you can purchase 7 adult tickets and bring up to 10 people for the same price. This comes out to $658 ($94 * 7). Call to book.

Do you offer private tours?

Yes! If you go with the large group discount mentioned above, you may have a private tour for $658 ($94 * 7). You can bring up to 10 people. Pending availability. To combine this tour with other activities, we require the typical private tour flat rate of $130 per hour, minimum of 4 hours. See our private tour page or call to book.

Eagle Beach State Recreation Area

Eagles, Sea Birds, and Tidal Marine Life Abound

Eagle Beach, around Juneau’s mile 27 marker, offers an astounding dynamic environment that can be found few places on earth. With average tides of 16 feet of change, these tidal flats hold many morsels of food for all manner of wild life, especially the bald eagles for which the beach is named. Beach goers of the human variety often wade out in their tufs to find clams, sea peaches, crabs, and many other delights. Low tide opens up around a quarter mile out to the waters edge, but be ware of your way back because the tide creeps in quickly, quietly, and in odd ways. If you aren’t careful, you may just end up swimming back!

Beach combing, painting, photography, and picnics are some of the popular activities of Eagle beach although people also kayak, stand up paddle board, and swim, the water can be quite cold and there isn’t an easy place to launch. At high tide there is significantly less beach and the birds tend to retreat into the trees along the waters edge, but there is a 1.5 mile loop above the high tide line that winds along Eagle River and across the beach between sand and beach grasses.

The access trail connects with the Yankee Basin and Eagle Glacier trails which offer an exceptional diversity of scene from old growth forest, muskeg, wetlands, river systems, glacial moraine, tidal flats, and many other micro systems. Eagle Beach State Park covers 570 acres including Boy Scout Beach and includes several cabins and a small campground so you can wake up to the sound of eagles picking their way through the tide. The best season for eagles and bears is late June to early August when the salmon start coming up the river.

There are three entrances to Eagle Beach that are all right off of Glacier Highway between mile 26 and mile 27 north of Juneau’s downtown and the Mendenhall Valley. The turnoffs are all on the left side if you are driving north on the road. The first turn off you will come to is the camping and cabins turnoff, the second is the picnic area, and the last is the northernmost access to the beach.

West Glacier / Mt. McGinnis Trail

Juneau’s Gateway to Mendenhall Glacier

Pros: Closest trail to see Mendenhall Glacier from.

Cons: A steep trail with no switchbacks once you start moving towards Mt. McGinnis

Distance: 3 miles to the end of West Glacier. 1.75 mi. to the top of McGinnis. 4.75 miles total (one-way)

Difficulty: Moderate to intense

Elevation Gain: ~1,000 ft to the end of West Glacier. Approximately 3,200 ft. to the top of McGinnis. The peak elevation of Mt. McGinnis sits at 4,228.

Trail Type: There-and-back

Congestion: Light

Trail: West Glacier maintained. McGinnis infrequently maintained.

Parking: Abundant – lot

Camping: Tent on McGinnis only

It starts out deceiving. West Glacier trail is a little jaunt through the rain forest on a flat winding trail along Mendenhall Lake with a few teaser glimpses to get you warmed up. Then, before you know it, there are stairs, a 350 meter climb and Mendenhall glacier looks almost like it is going to swallow you up before you turn off the cliffs for the real climb. A 1000 meter ridgeline rock and roll to the top.

The McGinnis trail offers an experience like few others. A little rainforest, a little alpine meadow, and a whole lot of dramatic peaks from the coastal range, Mendenhall glacier, and the ocean out the Chilkat Mountains. Arguably one of the best of the Mendenhall towers. At 4228 feet this peak will put you just about the line of the great ice age.

The coastal mountain ridge brings tough challenges of wet branches, rocks and at times a need for all fours. It can be a wonderful morning run or an all day hike. Especially great for winter over nighters and all day ski laps, just be prepared for frequent avalanches from the cornice buildup. Know your elements. If you do plan on spending the night, you will be in view of those looking for mountain goats and will be visible from just about every point out of the trees.

The trailhead begins with the west glacier trail located off of Montana creek road just past skater?s cabin. The road dead ends in a parking lot. From there the trail goes out along the lake before climbing up over the cliffs overlooking the Mendenhall Glacier. From there the trail will make a sharp turn to the left up the ridge. The trail becomes a little hard to follow, but is well flagged before becoming a clear trail again. Many sections are often covered in snow above tree line until mid July.

This trail offers some of the best berry foraging for highbush blueberries, trailing raspberries, watermelon berries, bunch berries, alpine blueberries for a large part of the summer and late into fall. It earns a top spot for many with two cut offs to reach the Mendenhall glacier and Juneau?s famed ice cave.

Mt. Juneau Trail

Juneau’s Best View of Downtown

Pros: Close to downtown Juneau and better maintained than other mountain peak trails.

Cons: None

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance (one-way): ~3 miles depending where you stop

Elevation Gain: ~3000 ft.

Trail Type: There-and-back

Congestion: Light

Trail: Mostly maintained

Parking: Sufficient

Camping: Tent

This is the iconic local climb of Juneau. A quick run through town leading into a warmup along Gold Creek, up the Perseverance Valley, and Gold Falls before turning up the mountain. Whacking your way through Salmon Berry bushes, into old spruce, before breaking out above the tree line. This trail is a wonderful taste of the mountains surrounding the town as well as a great gateway to longer trails.

The trail is partly switch back with several creek crossings, partly mud slogging, partly rock hopping, and mostly awesome. A favorite among many downtown locals, and the most rewarding short run with a well maintained trail system all the way to the top.

With a 3576 foot gain, Juneau does not boast as a high peak of the area, however, it does offer a greater reward than the effort needed. Without a well defined peak it can be difficult to decide where to stop. Luckily while you decide, the alpine is a great place to run into mountain goats, whistling pigs (a.k.a hoary marmots), ptarmigan, grouse, porcupines, and occasionally bears while moving to unfold a view over the Gastineau Channel, downtown, Silverbow basin, along with many peaks of the coastal range, Chilkats, and islands of the inside passage.

From the Perseverance trailhead, Mount Juneau is a 3 mile trip to the top. The trail has pretty reliable water sources, however, along the ridge in low snow years water can be limited. Mount Juneau trail can connect to Granite Creek Basin, Blackerby Ridge, Sheep Creek, or Mount Roberts. Only take these connection trails with experience, strength and a sense of caution. Several people have been lost and some have died. While these trails are truly rewarding, be prepared to return another day to tackle some of these beasts.

Easily the best view down on Juneau and gives a whole new perspective on the mountains seen from the water. Opening up the mystery to the other side of the inside passage. This trail can make a wonderful day, rain, shine or fog.

While Mount Bradley, more commonly referred to as Mount Jumbo by locals, stands out from anywhere downtown, this trail takes a little bit of determination to find. It is sandwiched between two houses on the 300 block of 5th street in South Douglas. It starts out with an open forest, beautiful bridges, stairs, and boards across streams and muskegs before turning straight up the ridge line. Often intensely rooted and thick mud, the trail makes a quick elevation gain of 3,337 feet over the course of 2.5 miles making it one of the faster, but more intensive trails around.

The work you put into this trail is what you get out of it. Rain, shine, or foggy, this trail has some of the most spectacular views to offer, but it will let you know just where your physical conditioning is at. Push through the burn of this trail to make all others in Juneau seem like a walk in Cope Park (park near Downtown Juneau). There are others with more roots, and some that are steeper, but none that have both in abundance. At the top there are plenty of views to enjoy, rock outcroppings to play on, and places to camp should you want to wake up to a magnificent sunrise. Watch your step, keep your head clear and move up in the world.

A popular portal for deer and grouse hunters, the trail receives a lot of mixed traffic from picnickers to hang gliders to skiers who will probably all agree that this peak is a hard one to avoid the desire of being on the crown jewel of Douglas island. As you break out of the tree line, the ridge winds up with a stunning view of the face before looping around and up to the peak. Especially, stunning for sunrise or sunset, just be sure you are ready to hike in the dark as the forest gets dark long before the sun sets.
